The first abortion pill was invented by a French pharmaceutical company in 1983 and approved by the French Minister of Health in 1988. Called Generic RU-486, it was later known as Mifepristone and Mifeprex. It was then tested for treatment of endometriosis, types of breast cancer, fibroid tumours and various other diseases. Explanations vary as to why such a trend has emerged.
