However, menses talks are often hushed, and many women find it embarrassing to talk to someone in understanding their monthly cycle at large. Like any other body part, uterus is mysterious. It has various functions to deliver, one of these being regulating how and when the blood flows during menstrual cycle. At after every 28 days, the female’s uterine lining breaks and is expelled from the vagina, which causes bleeding. This happens because the mature egg no longer gets an active sperm to get together to result a pregnancy.

So the uterus it decides she won’t wait any longer and closes down all the systems that could lead a pregnancy, in her terms, simply disallow implantation, which occurs when embryo attaches inside it to the endometrium line. When this lining is shed, the menses begin.

Normally a woman experience moderate bleeding for few days, some are done within 3 to 4 days, while for others, the cycle can extend till a week or so. In case, during this 28 days cycle in between the female eggs gets to meet a sperm, then fertilization happens, and the embryo transfers to attach at uterus causing a pregnancy.

Today various methods of birth control are used to protect against pregnancy, which initiate periods to disrupt conception. Some even use emergency contraception after unprotected intercourse if not regular contraceptive. However, it is a known fact that birth control is not 100 percent effective, and can lead to an unwanted or accidental pregnancy.

If the person is willing, she can continue the pregnancy or stop it mid-way to induce a miscarriage with abortion pills when a pregnancy is less than 10 weeks old, and later a surgical termination method until enabled to 20 to 24 weeks of conceiving. It is not odd that menstruation is a complicated subject, and influences a woman from the time of her puberty to menopause.

Health Disorders Related to Menses

Disturbance in menstrual cycle can cause heavy bleeding, cramping, and abdomen pain. These are also common symptoms of periods, but extreme pain could mean some problem. Normally, it may happen due to clots on ovaries, also an effect of polycystic syndrome resulting from lifestyle disorders, hormonal imbalance etc.

There are painkillers and treatments to manage such problems, but can take some time to treat it. In absence of menses, a person may experience infertility until it is remedied. For a woman expecting to become a mother, her periods are very essential.

It needs to be well regulated to plan when she has to conceive, and for this, it is best to consult with a gynecologist or obstetrician to understand when it is suitable to get pregnant, and if there are any health complications or not. Thus, menstruation is an integral part of a woman’s life and is a dominant phase that needs to be observed for overall wellbeing of the person.
